 Description:  Locations of abandoned mine shafts. 

      Source:  Kentucky Department for Natural Resources (DNR)
               Division of Mine Permits.  

      Origin:  Mine shafts were located from USGS topographic maps,
               geologic quadrangle maps, Kentucky Office of Mine Safety
               and Licensing index maps, Division of Abandoned Mine 
               Lands (AML) maps and Office of Surface Mining's 
               Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System (AMLIS). Latitudes
               and longitudes are estimates and have not been 
               field-verified in most cases. 
 
  Attributes:  Information describing each mine shaft is contained in
               the dBASE file, SHAFT.DBF. Each record contains the 
               following items:

                  QUAD_NAME  - quadrangle name                 
                  FILE_NO    - KDMM file number
                  LICENSE_YR - year mine was licensed
                  PERMIT     - mine permit number
                  COMPANY    - mine company name
                  MINENAME   - mine name
                  COAL_SEAM  - coal seam
                  ENTRY_TYPE - type of mine opening
                  X_COORD    - longitude (decimal degrees)
                  Y_COORD    - latitude (decimal degrees)
                  LATITUDE   - latitude (degrees, minutes, seconds)
                  LONGITUDE  - longitude (degrees, minutes, seconds)
                  SOURCE     - data source
                  DESCRIPT   - description of shaft
                  AMLIS_KEY  - AMLIS ID number
                  COUNTY     - county
                  PU_NUMBER  - AML planning unit number
