Updated: December 18, 2007 Source: Kentucky Department for Natural Resources (DNR) Surface Mining Information System (SMIS) database. Origin: Latitude and longitude data are submitted by the permittee with the permit application. In some cases, latitude and longitude have been field-verified by DSMRE personnel. The SMIS database is used for tracking all permitting and enforcement actions for coal mining activity in the Commonwealth of Kentucky including the current status of all pending and completed permitting activity. DNR continuously updates and maintains the SMIS database, from which the WATER layer is updated periodically.
