 Description:  Locations of surface mining permits (easternmost 
               intersection of the access road with a public road).

      Source:  Kentucky Department for Natural Resources (DNR) 
               Surface Mining Information System (SMIS) database.  

      Origin:  Latitude and longitude data are submitted by the 
               permittee in the permit application. Every effort has
               been made to verify the latitude and longitude, however
               errors in geographic coordinates do occur, especially
               for permits which are inactive (having a mine status code
               of RC, FF, SF, or XX). In some cases, latitude and longitude 
               have been field-verified by DNR personnel. 

               The SMIS database is used for tracking all permitting 
               and enforcement actions for coal mining activity in the
               Commonwealth of Kentucky including the current status of
               all pending and completed permitting activity. DNR 
               continuously updates and maintains the SMIS database, 
               from which the dsmre_permits layer is extracted.
 
  Attributes:  Information describing each permit is contained in the 
               dBASE file, dsmre_permits.dbf. Each record contains the 
               following items:

                  PERMIT_NUM    - permit number
                  QUAD_DESC     - quadrangle name
                  MINE_STATU    - mine status*
                  PER_NAME      - permittee                
                  REGION_DES	- Region name
                  PERM_ACT      - three most recent permitting actions
                  LAT_DEG       - latitude degrees
                  LAT_MIN       - latitude minutes
                  LAT_SEC       - latitude seconds
                  LNG_DEG       - longitude degrees
                  LNG_MIN       - longitude minutes
                  LNG_SEC       - longitude seconds
                  INSPECTOR     - Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement field inspector
                  CHIEF         - Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement supervisor
                  MRP           - indicates availability of MRP map
